Del Mar, California — From the moment you stepped in to the Del Mar Race track Paddock on Sunday, October 16th, awes were heard as it was like walking into the world’s finest museum. That’s because the Del Mar Concours d’Elegance created a living museum that day — a virtual showcase of many of the world’s most beautiful and rare automobiles. (PHOTO 1) Gracing the famed paddock were the finest examples of art in engineering and design from a time when the masters who designed these moving machines looked at their creation as art in motion. From the detailed upholstery to the smallest part of the engine, every component was perfect, and still is today.

The Del Mar Concours d’ Elegance was the vision of CEO and Chairman Timothy Henry. Eighty of the finest automobiles in the world entered to be judged and hoped to win the coveted “best of show” award. Across the board, both those that attended and those that entered commented on the richness of the event and the asontishing caliber of automobiles in attendance. Exclusive and important, it was a magnificent day.

While most Concours d’Elegance are hosted on a golf course, the venue, the historic and elegant Del Mar Race Track Paddock, was the perfect backdrop for this event. Ed Gilberston, Chief Judge for the renowned Pebble Beach Concours and Honorary Chief Judge for the Del Mar Concours, commented on his exit at the end of the day, “this truly is the perfect setting for the finest horses and the finest examples of horsepower.”

So which of these marvels of horsepower won the highly sought after awards determined by the best judges in the country? It was the incredible 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition Convertible owned by Rancho Santa Fe’s Ken and Ann Smith that befittingly achieved the coveted Best of Show award. Magnificently restored and gleaming in the richest and deepest of blues, this automobile is a work of art.

Taking the second highest award was the fabulous 1932 red Stutz Bearcat owned by Richard Mitchell from Montgomery, Texas.

Winning the Chairman’s Award was the very rare 1956 Pagaso Z 102 Panorama Coupe owned by Jack Vopal and Family.

The entire event was elegant and enjoyed by all as live smooth jazz added to the ambience as did the opportunity to actually see these works of art and engineering in person.

Plans are already underway for the 2012 Del Mar Concours d’Elegance. “We were incredibly honored to have the best of the best at this event. The 2011 event raised the bar and next year’s event will take it even steps higher,” said Timothy Henry, CEO and Chairman.”

Please see below for the complete list of judged categories and the automobiles won.
